Who does art and culture belong to? How can art help restitution of cultural heritage?
Our new catalogue “Tide of Returns”, available end of May and accompanying the exhibition at which is still running until October 11th.
It examines repatriation processes beyond political and legal debates. Pushing against institutional constraints, the .erc opens up new perspectives on cultural heritage and demonstrates how art can actively pave the way for restitution.
Bringing together community members and long-standing collaborators, the Repatriates Collective is united by a steadfast political commitment to restitution projects in Australia, Benin, Mexico, Nigeria, and Namibia. The voices gathered here come from the visual arts, art criticism, history, film studies and curatorial practice. Through multifaceted approaches—ranging from intensive archival research to visual essays—they offer deep insights into the complex challenges and forward-looking possibilities of global repatriation processes.

We’ve launched a set of books presenting the legacy of groundbreaking artist Niki de Saint Phalle.
Following our monograph “Niki de Saint Phalle” and “Niki de Saint Phalle: A to Z” we are now publishing “Niki de Saint Phalle. The Grotto” examining her spectacular legacy in Hanover.
Spectacular environments play a prominent role in Niki de Saint Phalle’s unique oeuvre. The walk-in Nanas, the Stravinsky Fountain in Paris, and her Tarot Garden in Tuscany are masterful examples of this. Her last completed major project in Hanover became her artistic legacy: the grotto in the Herrenhausen Gardens, redesigned according to her plans. Built in 1676 as part of the Baroque gardens, the grotto, originally decorated with shells, crystals, glass, and minerals, once served as a summer retreat. It was restored for EXPO 2000 and subsequently redesigned by Niki de Saint Phalle in her characteristic style. This completely revised new edition of the 2003 monograph describes the history of its creation and restoration and highlights the art-historical significance of the grotto from today’s perspective.
