More than a decade ago, my photography teacher, António Alves, gave us an assignment that felt completely backwards: take bad photos.

Forget balanced compositions. Miss the focus. Ignore the light. Shoot as if you had no idea what you were doing.

At first, it seemed like a pointless exercise. Then it clicked.

The lesson was never about making bad photographs. It was about learning to see beyond perfection. Sometimes an image that breaks every rule still captures something honest, unexpected, or impossible to recreate.

Ever since, I’ve found myself appreciating the beauty hidden in imperfect shots.

Here are 10 badly taken photos that somehow deserved to be saved on my camera roll.
