As the elevator doors open at Andaz Shanghai, Heritage Glaze reveals itself through artisan glass bricks, warm light, and a shifting dance of shadows.

Inspired by the brick architecture of the Former French Concession, the installation turns the city’s layered past into something luminous and new.

Heritage Glaze

There are parts of Shanghai where the city still carries the trace of another time. The Former French Concession, a historic area in Shanghai once controlled by the French government, left behind tree-lined avenue and brick residences that emerged as a unique fusion of European architecture and local Shanghai life. This layered architectural memory became the muse for Heritage Glaze, which takes the familiar rhythm of brick and reimagines it through artisan glass.

As the day moves across Shanghai, shadows dance on the glass wall reminiscent of the afternoon sun cast across the brick walls of the old Concession houses.

Before Herbarium begins to glow, it passes through fire.

Real flowers and plants are impressed into hand-blown glass, meeting heat for a single, fleeting moment. The living form disappears, but its memory remains: a leaf, a stem, a bloom, preserved in light.

In this Napa Valley residence, the craft feels especially close to its source. Outside, nature continues to grow. Inside, its delicate traces are held in glass.
