We cordially invite you to the Public Projects lecture titled Shady Homes, which will take place at the VI PER Gallery this Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from 7 PM.

Urban life is getting hot. Heat has become one of the defining conditions of our time simultaneously vital and life-threatening. As global temperatures rise, their effects manifest spatially: in how we move, gather, and inhabit our spaces. Yet extreme heat is still largely treated as an acute emergency rather than a long-term condition requiring adaptation and planning.

While architectural responses often focus on high-tech climate control, the act of seeking shade remains one of the most fundamental spatial practices to seek comfort. We investigate shade as critical, minimal-invasive strategy, learning from the rich knowledge of the Mediterranean region.

Public Projects is a collaboration founded by architects Laura Bruder .spaces and Zarah Fahrni , working between Zurich, Stuttgart, Paris, and Cairo. Educated at ETH Zurich, TU Delft, and EPFL respectively, they share a deep commitment to spatial justice and to creating frameworks for equitable access and negotiation of space. Their practice advocates for human-centered design and participatory methods that reimagine the social and cultural potential of the built environment. Their work focuses on architectural strategies that ignite grassroots engagement and foster collective ownership. Through collaborative and imaginative processes, they aim to create spaces that are inclusive, functional, emotionally resonant, and culturally grounded. Public Projects cultivates a design ethos that is grounded, playful, and politically aware, working at the intersection of research, design, and collective imagination to shape a more equitable and sustainable spatial future.

The lecture is part of the accompanying programme of the Home Discomforts exhibition curated by .jano and forms part of the .community programme.

Join us on Tuesday, 19 May, at 6 pm for the opening of Home Discomforts, curated by Marianna Janowicz (.jano). The event will begin with a lecture by Daniel Barber (), followed by a discussion and a guided tour of the exhibition.

How will we feed ourselves in the future? Do laundry? Stay comfortable? Care for one another? With rising sea levels, increasing air temperatures, scarcer resources, and new energy regimes, the future of domesticity will require radical changes in rituals and behaviours: a redesign.

What does the market offer today? More efficient air conditioning, smart appliances, faster deliveries — comforts that often shift rather than reduce energy use and labour. Better insulation brings only temporary savings, while washing machines led to more water use and more frequent laundry. The culture of efficiency has failed us.

Home Discomforts explores alternative ways of living that rely less on sealed, perfectly controlled indoor environments. The Global North has long overconsumed at the expense of the Global South, and overdeveloped regions may now need to learn to live with less comfort. Could lower consumption, shared resources, and collective care create a future that is less comfortable but ultimately happier?
