Pre- and post-analytical proficiency testing 13/05/2026

Quality decisions depend on more than instruments. Eurachem spotlights how pre- and post-analytical PT/EQA assess the full pathway—from sampling to interpretation—to drive quality and harmonisation. ISO 15189 stresses EQA should check the entire process, including pre- and post-examination.

• 🔍 Why it matters: reveals variation in sample prep, gaps vs guidelines, and inconsistent interpretation that routine PT can miss
• 🧪 Clinical chemistry: combine patient context + results; expert groups rank interpretative advice and share feedback
• 🧫 Microbiology (food poisoning): choose target organism(s), justify methods, report results, and decide on information dissemination
• 🧸 Toy safety: assess a sourced toy against EN 71; select clauses, tests, and labelling; compare with model answers
• 💧 Drinking water: evaluate near‑limit samples per Directive 98/83/EC; report results, uncertainty, and pass/fail; insights can inform regulators
• 🚀 Get started: find schemes via national accreditation bodies or EPTIS

Steroidal Hormones & Neurosteroids in Bacterial Therapy 08/05/2026

A promising way to outsmart superbugs is here! 🧪🦠

• Led by Eva Kudová (IOCB Prague) and Jitka Viktorová (UCT Prague), researchers designed androstane-based steroid derivatives that turbocharge existing antibiotics. 🚀
• The best two molecules (compounds 13 and 16) block bacterial efflux pumps, slashing the doses needed for ciprofloxacin and erythromycin. 💊🔒
• One lead also suppresses Staphylococcus aureus virulence genes—hitting resistance and pathogenicity at once. 🧬🛡️
• Crucially, the most active compounds were non‑toxic to human immune cells and showed no detectable endocrine activity. ✅
• This positions steroidal scaffolds as potent antibiotic adjuvants to overcome efflux‑mediated resistance. 🔬

Authors: Daniela Brdová, Bára Křížkovská, Jan Špaček, Zdeněk Míchal, Eva Jablonská, Ondřej Strnad, Hana Chodounská, Eszter Szánti‑Pintér, Marina Morozovová, Václav Hanžl, Jan Tkadlec, Martijn Riool, Jan Lipov, Jitka Viktorová, Eva Kudová. Published in Eur. J. Med. Chem. (2026). 📄
