It is widely believed that the artists flattered their clients by portraying them as more beautiful than they actually were. Is it so? It depends on the particular artist and their era, but let's discuss it more.

Firstly, before the invention of photography, people perceived the portrait in much the same way as we perceive ID photos. You don't want to have a pimple on your nose on your driver's license, do you? Our ancestors used the version of Photoshop that was available to them.

Secondly, in order to be popular and make good money, it was necessary for an artist to maintain good relations with customers and make the new acquaintances. It would be difficult to do this, offending former customers with a too naturalistic depiction of their shortcomings.

For example, in the 17th century, one obese nobleman who was proud of his weight of 200 kg asked a portrait painter to convey all his splendor.

The Russian artist Serov deliberately painted his portraits without embellishment and as naturally as possible, but enjoyed wild success with his contemporaries - ordering a portrait from him was considered a bold gesture.

There is also a well-known story of a “risky” portrait of the English King Charles II (reigned in 1660–1685). John Riley painted a realistic portrait of him. Seeing the result, the monarch was surprised: “Do I look like him? Turns out I'm an ugly guy!". However, Charles II, who was called the “Cheerful King” for his love of life and kind nature, paid for the portrait and kept it for history.
