DOUBLE TROUBLE: JANYPKA MEETS TALAGA
„Headless Mule is a catharsis for all those persecuted for their sexuality“
Martin Talaga’s solo performance produced by PINKBUS platform explores a current theme inspired by an ancient Brazilian legend. The Headless Mule (mula-sem-cabeça in Portuguese) is a mythical character in Brazilian folklore that represents a ghost of a woman cursed by God for her sins. The legend has it that a woman who seduces a priest will turn every Thursday midnight into a mule (a hybrid between a donkey and a horse) with flames of fire in lieu of her head. She will kill everything in her way. In Brazilian countryside the belief in this legend is so strong that some people don’t leave their house on Thursday night. Over the course of time the myth’s interpretation has evolved and today it stands for sins such as adultery, necrophagy, and sacrilege.
Nowadays we could see it as slut-shaming. Slut-shaming refers to a targeted and condemnatory denigration and denouncement of people, mostly women and girls, for any expression of their sexuality, be it in their behaviour, opinion, or attire. Slut-shaming is also often used in relationship to gay minority.

Is art defined by failure?
The culmination of Tomáš Procházka’s extensive durational project loosely follows his debut durational performance Evening, the Moment Before I Committed Su***de. The work stands at the intersection of documentary film, performance, and drag art. Once again, Procházka turns the camera on himself, performing an act of penance for the sins of his past. The artist is in a process of atonement — turning life’s lemons into lemonade.
As a protagonist, Procházka becomes her own work in progress. They are in constant evolution, because a human being is a creature that never ceases to develop. Lemonade therefore has neither a beginning nor an end — it simply exists. It unfolds throughout the artist’s life, before the audience’s eyes as well as in the anonymity of the virtual blog Lysé Ztráty.
Before the spectators, the artist ages, fails, loves, hates, rejoices, cries… The work offers the audience a unique opportunity to pause and remember that even seemingly fatal mistakes are what make us human.
“Tonight, I’d like to try something. It might not work out, but that’s okay — because I can always try again next time.”
