🇬🇧
Discover the tragic story of Sweden’s most ambitious warship – the Vasa (1628).
Built to impress both allies and enemies, she was one of the most ornate and heavily armed vessels of her time… yet she sank on her very first voyage, just minutes after leaving port.

The Swedish warship Vasa was launched in 1628 and was intended to be one of the most powerful symbols of King Gustav II Adolf’s naval ambitions. She carried 64 cannons, richly carved wooden sculptures, and two gun decks — an impressive but risky design for her time.

On 10 August 1628, Vasa set sail for her maiden voyage from the Stockholm harbour. Just after leaving the quay, a sudden gust of wind filled her sails. The ship immediately heeled to port, took in water through the open gunports, and within minutes sank barely 1,300 meters from shore. Dozens of people perished on board, and the magnificent new flagship disappeared beneath the waves before ever reaching open sea.

For more than 330 years, the Vasa rested in the mud of Stockholm harbour, perfectly preserved in the cold brackish water. In 1961, the ship was raised almost intact — an extraordinary feat of marine archaeology. Over 98 % of the wood is original, including thousands of carved decorations that still bear traces of 17th-century paint.

💡 Did you know?
When Vasa was raised, the sails were still on board — the oldest surviving sails in the world. They were made of h**p and carefully conserved; today they can be seen in the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.

Today, the Vasa Museum houses the restored ship in a controlled environment, allowing visitors to step back in time and admire one of the most remarkable time capsules of maritime history.
