🟣🎥✨ Short documentary film - Bio Awaking is available for everyone to watch!
This is a short documentary film that illuminates two years of research, artistic residencies, and collaborations within the international project Bio Awaking. The film offers insight into the processes and ideas of artists and scientists who have jointly explored the interrelations of living systems, regeneration, and interspecies connectedness. Europe, as a shared natural environment, is facing significant environmental challenges. The territory of the former Yugoslavia, being one of the areas particularly exposed to pollution, becomes a focal point for positive change to which the project aims to contribute. In collaboration with partners from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, and Croatia the project seeked to explore environmental protection issues by engaging a broader professional, artistic, and activist community. Advocating for sustainable development through participatory bio art installations, Bio Awaking aimed to raise awareness of the role art can play in sustainability processes. The specific objectives of the project included developing a network of bio artists across Europe, strengthening the capacities of European artists in utilizing biomaterials, and creating bio art installations using environmental samples. Additionally, the project focused on involving decision-makers in all phases of the process, fostering an audience for bio art that supports environmental conservation, and nurturing cultural, artistic, and educational collaboration in addressing environmental challenges in Europe and the Balkans.

🌳 The initiative “One Tree(s)” — October 2025
The initiative “One Tree(s)” marked the final stage of the BioAwaking project’s public activities, symbolically highlighting ecological awareness through a tree-planting performance across the Western Balkans — in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia. Through this collective gesture, the action promoted collaboration, ecosystem preservation, and public engagement, uniting art, science, and community. The tree-planting program was accompanied by the screening of a short documentary film capturing key moments, shared activities, and the outcomes achieved within the Bio Awaking project.

Each partner country also organized its own local program as part of this final action.
For the team ReAktor, the event took place at SKUP (Bulevar despota Stefana 5, Novi Sad) on October 19th.

✨Creatures: translocating animate laboratory agents into cultural spaces – Marie Tatjana Niederleithinger (AUT/DE),
✨Fungi and plants interplay – why is mycelium so important in terrestrial ecosystems – Dr. Milana Rakić (RS).
💫The workshop “Microworld of Molds”, led by Milica Rukavina (RS), gave participants insight into the hidden microscopic processes in nature.
💫Visitors could also explore two artworks created during the project as part of the Bio StArt program.

OUTDOOR BIOLAB WORKSHOPS within the project BIO AWAKING at Visitor center Pecka! 🥳

✨Living Systems through Art
Workshop led by KRISTIJAN TKALEC, Head of BioTehna Lab at Kersnikova
In this workshop, participants explored how contemporary artists integrate living systems into their practice, examined artist–scientist collaborations, and gained hands-on experience with microorganisms, learning basic cultivation techniques and DIY lab tools.
