“VICTOR HERRERA: He was probably one of the best human beings I’d ever known. A noble soul. With the big, compassionate heart for all those who suffered the injustice of this terrible, earthly plane. At the same time, he was one of the most unpredictable crazy f***s around, going from one extreme to another. I guess these two things got him into politics in the first place. I’ve heard various stories. There were even some rumors that linked him to certain terrorist groups, but I doubt that any of these were true. However, after the incident he seemed very different. He looked completely broken, a shadow of a man. And he was constantly waffling about spiritual warfare, exercising demons, and “the material prison”, so a lot of people thought he’d gone completely crazy. I mean, he wasn’t really a religious kind of guy, you know, quite the opposite. He’d always seen himself as a revolutionary, and now, all of a sudden, there was this “spiritual” gibberish. Then, he just disappeared. Nobody knew about his whereabouts. People thought he was dead. At the end, it turned out that he was roaming through the desert for weeks, completely lost, with almost no food and water. He was looking for a sign, he said. I don’t know what he had found in the desert, but he looked like a man reborn when he came back. You could feel this silent joy, this radiant calmness around him. Sometimes he would break it by telling the nightmarish stories of the horrible things he had seen in desert but it would always come back… And he would start to weep, telling me about the light of Heaven, most clear and brilliant, that came to his rescue… And then, after some time, he did one of these unpredictable things again. He joined the Sufi order, founded a mariachi band dedicated to the Virgin, and named himself El Maryami Mariachi.”
