Effective communication isn’t just about what you say—it’s how you say it.

Expressing your emotions is central to maintaining sound mental health. In workplace environments, it's not deemed professional to simply let off steam.

But you shouldn't bottle your emotions up either.

Communicating your feelings clearly builds better relationships. Bottling them up breeds resentment and frustration.

Start small, speak honestly.

Here are 5 respectful and constructive ways to express your feelings in the workplace:

Use “I” Statements – Frame your perspective: “I FELT overlooked in the meeting this morning and it has left me feeling…”

Be Specific – Label the emotion clearly: frustrated, concerned, motivated, etc.

Stay Solution-Focused – Keep the conversation forward-thinking, not personal. Focus on the current situation, not past grievances.

Mind Your Tone – Stay calm even when emotions are high. Try to be assertive, not aggressive. Breathe before you speak and stay centred.

Invite Dialogue – Encourage open, two-way communication by making space for the opinions or reasons of others: “I’d like to hear your thoughts so we can reach a mutual agreement.”
