"Venezuela has been bobbing around in Washington’s crosshairs since 2005 when the latter decided to impose sanctions on the then regime of the late Hugo Chavez, citing human rights abuses, corruption, drug-trafficking, terrorism and political repression. The sanctions were not broad or sweeping as in the case of Russia but targetted at government officials and Venezuela’s oil exports.

Chavez (El Presidente for Life!) died in office in 2013 and was replaced by another El Presidente for Life, Nicholas Maduro. In 2022, the sanctions were eased somewhat and some licenses were granted to Chevron to carry out operations in Venezuela."
