Focusing on word families will give you insights into the building blocks of words in English.

Gradually, you will become able to recognize the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes and be able to apply this knowledge when you first see or hear a word.

Many students of English find it a real challenge to use the different parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) correctly in context.

Admittedly, this is something that takes time, focus, a bit of scientific spirit and curiosity. At first, it can be difficult to grasp. However, it is well worth the time and effort as mastering this aspect of vocabulary will take your English to the next level – B2 and C1.

Let’s look at the family of the word family

There are friends, there’s family and there are friends that become family.

▪︎ Family, familiar, familiarity
We stick to unhealthy relationship patterns because this is familiar – we know these patterns from growing up in our primary families – and this familiarity gives us a sense of security.

▪︎ Familiarize
Before you start writing about something, it is important to familiarize yourself with the topic by reading or listening about it.

The expression ‘Familiarity breeds contempt’ means that if we know a person or a situation very well, we can lose respect and start taking things for granted.
