Costa Rica is home to one of the most successful conservation stories in the world. Today, more than **25% of the country's land is legally protected** through national parks, wildlife refuges, biological reserves, and protected areas.

This achievement did not happen overnight. In the 1970s, Costa Rica began establishing a network of national parks to protect its extraordinary biodiversity. Important legislation followed, including the **Forestry Law of 1996**, which prohibited the conversion of natural forests to other land uses and introduced incentives for landowners to conserve and restore forests.

These policies helped reverse decades of deforestation. In the 1980s, forest cover had fallen to around 20–25% of the country's territory. Today, forests cover more than half of Costa Rica, making it one of the few tropical countries to successfully reverse deforestation on a national scale.

While some countries have larger total protected areas, Costa Rica stands out because of its small size and the remarkable recovery of its forests. The country protects an exceptional concentration of wildlife, containing nearly **6% of the world's biodiversity** despite covering only about **0.03% of Earth's land surface**.
