A past client and current owner of a pizzeria, called to tell me that he is about to buy another property. He went on to say that he would be representing himself in order to save money. He tells me that he has been listening to an investor podcast about investing in Costa Rica, and excitedly "has seen the light and is going to be a great investor" with all that he has learned.

Then he asks me if I can share some comparable properties, help him estimate closing costs, and calculate the return on investment if he gets a mortgage instead of paying with cash. Also, to recommend a good notary incase his current lawyer has any conflicts of interest, and perhaps offer him some negotiation tips, because, after all, it is a buyer's market here.

After taking a deep breath to calm myself, I told him that I would prefer to discuss these topics with him in person, and that if he doesnt mind me to visit him in his pizzeria.

After greeting each other, I gave him two frozen pizzas that I had picked up at the supermarket beforehand. I asked him to bake and serve them so we could eat and talk about his investment property.

It was at that moment he realized what he had asked of me.

My knowledge is my career. Questions that you would ask a friend as a favor are like asking a chef to cook your frozen pizza. I'd be happy to oblige your taste in the market, but please consider this is how I support my family.
