When I moved to Pasto, Colombia, it took me about six months to become fluent enough in Spanish that I could get by in any Spanish-speaking country. I could talk about myself, ask for directions, order in a restaurant, and engage in small talk.

That being said, we really enjoyed our visit. Yes, it was packed, but it was still a sight to behold. I definitely want to go back during the off-season to fully experience everything. Now that I’ve been, I’d say it’s more like a timeshare than a theme park. My advice is to stay for at least 4 nights and consider splurging on a hotel either on-site or nearby. There’s so much to see, and it’s well worth it.

Colombia is an absolutely beautiful country with a stunning array of landscapes. When I first decided to visit Colombia back in 2016, one spot that was high on my bucket list was Caño Cristales. I stumbled upon it during my research, even before the movie Encanto came out. If you've seen that movie, you’ll remember the breathtaking pink and yellow river where Mirabel and her abuelita make up at the end, surrounded by butterflies.
