Recently, a major milestone was reached in the 1420mm Cold Rolling Mill Line project, designed and manufactured by our company. The core component—the Mill Housing (Mill Stand)—has been successfully hoisted and installed at the client’s site.
This 1420mm cold rolling line is more than just a mill stand; it is a fully integrated system featuring automated uncoiling, high-precision AGC (Automatic Gauge Control) systems, skin-pass technology, and advanced coiling systems.

The cold rolling thickness gauge is a core piece of equipment for ensuring the accuracy of strip thickness and is widely used for online thickness monitoring in steel production. Its working principle is mainly divided into non-contact measurement (such as X-ray, laser) and contact measurement (such as inductive, mechanical), among which the X-ray thickness gauge is the most widely used.

The X-ray thickness gauge is the mainstream technology for thickness measurement in cold rolling equipment. It operates based on the law of intensity attenuation as radiation penetrates a material. When X-rays pass through the strip, part of the radiation is absorbed. The remaining intensity has an exponential relationship with the material thickness. By detecting the intensity of the transmitted X-rays, the strip thickness can be calculated.

This system consists of an X-ray source, an ionization chamber (detector), a signal processing unit, and a control system. The X-ray tube emits a continuous spectrum of radiation, which is received by the ionization chamber and converted into electrical signals. After amplification and compensation, these signals are sent to a computer for real-time thickness display. To ensure stability, the equipment is equipped with a recirculating water cooling system. The flow rate should be no less than 2.5 L/min, and the pressure should be maintained at around 3 bar.

Another thickness measurement method is laser thickness gauging. This method uses dual upper and lower laser beams in an opposed arrangement. By measuring the positional changes of the laser spots on CCD sensors, the displacement of the upper and lower surfaces of the object is calculated, thereby determining the thickness. This method is suitable for measuring strips under high-temperature and high-speed conditions, offering advantages such as high responsiveness and non-destructive measurement.
