🎗️ Wellness Saturday: GoMAD Raises Awareness on Breast Cancer and Medical Myths

The GoMAD Wellness Team dedicated this week’s Wellness Saturday to an impactful awareness session on breast cancer prevention, early detection, and the dangers of medical misinformation.

Led by Assistant Wellness Coordinator Ayuk Eta John, the session educated members on breast cancer risk factors, symptoms, and the importance of regular Breast Self-Examinations (BSE).

Participants openly discussed harmful cultural misconceptions, including myths surrounding bras, biopsies, and traditional practices such as breast pounding. The Wellness Team strongly emphasized that early medical diagnosis and treatment save lives.

The session also addressed the stigma surrounding mastectomies and the dangers of abandoning professional medical care for unverified alternative treatments promoted by so-called “quarter doctors.”

The program concluded with a strong message encouraging early detection, accurate health information, and compassionate support for breast cancer patients within communities.

The community focused on confronting fear and embracing personal potential. Participants reflected on motivational clips from Coach Carter and Akeelah and the Bee, both centered on the message that fear and self doubt often hold people back more than actual limitations.

The session encouraged deep reflection on how many individuals play small, procrastinate, or avoid action due to fear of failure or judgment. Members shared personal insights about struggling with hesitation, insecurity, and delayed action despite knowing what to do.

A key takeaway was the need to stop waiting for perfection and instead take intentional steps toward growth, even when afraid.

The director emphasized that personal and collective progress is limited when people hide their gifts or allow fear to make decisions for them.

The session concluded with a strong call to action for participants to step out, take risks, create, and pursue their purpose, reinforcing that even failure is more valuable than inaction.
