WORLD WATER DAY CELEBRATION. The World Water Day has been held on March 22, every year since 1993, and it celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is an annual United Nations observance day that highlights the importance of fresh water. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. When safe water, sanitation, and hygiene are lacking, crowded communities and settlement environments can quickly become unsafe, increasing health and protection risks – especially for women and girls. World water day this March 22, 2026 was celebrated under the theme "Water and Gender: Where water flows, equality grows". Globally, everyone is being affected by water crises but not at the same rate being that women and girls are more affected since they are the ones mostly involved in managing water. More often, the systems that govern water leave women and girls out of decision-making and leadership. But the theme of this year focus turns to inclusive water governance centred on women’s leadership as a driver of equality and long-term stability. As part of commemorative activities to celebrate this day, Women For Environment (WOMEV) joined the Regional Delegation of Environment, Nature protection and Sustainable Development together with the Buea Council and other 25 civil society organizations in Buea in cleaning the water catchments at Bwintingi/Bwetiva and also planted trees around the catchment areas. It was a good exercise as the activity aimed at protecting our environment and preventing our water sources from drying up. The initiative highlights the importance of a collective action in safeguarding our water resources and also brought about synergy among the civil society organizations in Buea. WOMEV remains committed to promoting access to safe drinking water and in carrying out WASH activities.
