NDEFCAM PERSPECTIVE.

"Watch What You Drink And Where You Buy."

The recent revelation of fake palm wine production in Yaounde, as in other towns and villages in the country serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive risks lurking within the beverage industry, prompting a critical reflection on the importance of vigilance when it comes to choosing what we drink and where we source our beverages. The discovery that unscrupulous individuals are concocting artificial palm wine using a mixture of water, cassava, ethanol, yeast, and other harmful chemicals not only raises serious health concerns but also underscores the insidious nature of counterfeit alcohol production.

Beyond the production of fake palm wine, it is distressing to acknowledge that a wide array of popular alcoholic beverages, including beer, table wine, whiskies, and canned drinks, are now vulnerable to adulteration by profit-driven individuals who prioritize monetary gain over public health and safety. This reprehensible practice threatens the well-being of communities and highlights the urgent need for robust regulatory measures to combat the proliferation of counterfeit drinks.

In response to this alarming trend, state authorities must take decisive action to eradicate clandestine operations and enforce stringent regulations that ensure beverages are supplied and sold exclusively by accredited dealers. Safeguarding the public against the dangers posed by fake alcoholic drinks, which often mimic authentic products while concealing harmful substances, should be a top priority to prevent widespread health hazards and protect consumer rights.

As consumers, it is incumbent upon us to exercise caution and discernment in our beverage choices to mitigate the risks associated with counterfeit drinks. By adhering to simple, yet crucial guidelines such as avoiding suspicious sources, verifying proper labeling, exercising skepticism towards unusually low prices, scrutinizing packaging for inconsistencies, trusting our senses to detect unusual odors or tastes, reporting any suspected counterfeits to relevant authorities, and opting for reputable brands with established credibility, we can fortify our defenses against the perils of fake alcoholic drinks.

The repercussions of consuming counterfeit beverages extend far beyond immediate health risks, encompassing potential poisoning, allergic reactions, and long-term health complications that can have lasting consequences on individual well-being and community welfare. Therefore, it is incumbent upon each of us to prioritize our safety and that of our communities by remaining vigilant, informed, and proactive in our efforts to combat the menace of counterfeit drinks. Let us heed this cautionary tale as a call to action, uniting our commitment to upholding standards of integrity, transparency, and consumer protection within the beverage industry for the benefit of all. NDEFCAM PERSPECTIVE

FIRE RAVAGES BAMENDA MAIN MARKET.

The devastating fire that swept through the Bamenda main market on February 22 has brought to light deep-seated issues surrounding urban planning, governance, and public safety in the city. As I reflect on the tragedy and its implications, it becomes clear that the root cause of the disaster lies in a combination of neglect, mismanagement, and a lack of foresight on the part of municipal authorities.

The scene of the market entrance blocked by containers and kiosks, parking spaces converted into makeshift selling areas, fire lanes obstructed, and water sources inaccessible due to encroachments by informal businesses paints a grim picture of a city where short-term gains and revenue generation take precedence over essential city planning considerations. This blatant disregard for basic safety protocols and urban infrastructure standards has left the market vulnerable and ill-prepared to handle emergencies such as the recent fire.

The inability of the Army Rescue Unit to effectively respond to the blaze due to restricted access points and blocked pathways underscores the critical importance of maintaining clear and unobstructed emergency routes in public spaces. The sight of bystanders helplessly watching as the flames engulfed the market serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of the city council's administrative negligence and the high cost of prioritizing financial interests over public welfare.

The lack of vision and strategic planning on the part of city authorities in Bamenda is a cause for concern and demands immediate attention from the supervisory bodies and oversight bodies like the Divisional Officer for Bamenda 11 Sub Division, Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam and the Governor of the North West Region. It is imperative that those in positions of power are held accountable for their actions and decisions, and that comprehensive measures are put in place to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of the city's residents.

To address the systemic issues that have led to the current state of affairs in Bamenda, a paradigm shift is needed in the approach to urban governance and city management. Instead of focusing solely on revenue generation and short-term gains, city authorities must prioritize long-term sustainable development, infrastructure maintenance, and emergency preparedness.

By fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and public participation, city officials can work collaboratively with the community to address the challenges facing Bamenda and pave the way for a brighter and more resilient future. It is only through a concerted effort to set aside personal agendas and prioritize the common good that Bamenda can truly thrive and fulfill its potential as a vibrant and prosperous city.
