GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM🏺
Whatever you do when visiting Cairo, don’t miss the Grand Egyptian Museum!
Finally, after 20 years of construction (and much longer in the planning), the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) fully opened its doors last November.
This much awaited museum is the largest museum in the world for a single civilization. GEM is estimated to showcase over 100.000 artifacts from the ancient Egypt’s culture and society, including over 20.000 pieces that’s never been shown before.
The highlights are numerous, but many visitors come here for the treasures of King Tutankhamun who’s collection comprising 5398 (!) pieces.
The Grand Egyptian Museum is located about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from the Giza Pyramid Complex so it’s easy to combine with the pyramids, although we recommend visiting on separate days as both sites takes time.
We absolutely cannot recommend this museum enough, and it was definitely one of our highlights in Cairo. Actually, we’ve been waiting for the GEM to fully open before we planned our Egypt travel, and we’re so happy we got to experience the excellent Grand Egyptian Museum.
Not only is the museum one of the best archaeological museums in the world, it is also an architectural masterpiece itself, so take your time here to explore it fully!
TIP: plan a few nights in the Giza area and a few nights downtown Cairo to make the most of your visit. This way you don’t have to battle the heavy Cairo traffic to visit the pyramids or the museum.
