How long can a cancer cell line be cultured before its gene expression starts to drift, and why does it matter for research?
Our scientists at Central Europe investigated exactly that. By tracking the transcriptomic profile of HCT-116 colon cancer cells over 25 passages (~16 weeks), they found that gene expression remained largely stable up to passage 15. Beyond that point, genes linked to cell proliferation and cell death began to shift - changes that could affect how cells respond to therapies and compromise experimental reproducibility.
The takeaway: passage number is not a minor detail. It's a variable that can fundamentally influence research outcomes.
This work reinforces our commitment to rigorous, reproducible science and to understanding biology at the molecular level.
