New Data: Visual Occlusion and Blood Flow Restriction Lead the Way in Chronic Ankle Instability Rehab 🦶

👩‍⚕️ 👨‍🔬 If you are treating patients suffering from chronic ankle instability (CAI), a massive new study just shed light on which rehab exercises deliver the best results. Published in EFORT Open Reviews, this network meta-analysis mapped data from 48 randomized controlled trials involving 1,630 individuals to rank the clinical effectiveness of different exercise therapies.

📊 The research evaluated seven common protocols: balance training, strength training, comprehensive training, plyometrics, whole-body vibration, blood flow restriction training (BFRT), and visual occlusion balance training (VOBT).

🌟 Here is what the clinical evidence reveals:

✅ The Ultimate Winner for Balance: Visual Occlusion Balance Training (VOBT) was ranked as the single most effective therapy for improving dynamic postural control.

✅ The Ultimate Winner for Function: Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFRT) scored highest for boosting self-reported patient function.

❌ The Low-Value Option: Whole-body vibration training failed to show any added benefit over basic balance training.

👉 Clinical Takeaway: Traditional strength and balance training are good, but adding visual restrictions or blood flow cuffs to your protocols can significantly optimise your patient's 4-to-6-week recovery window.
