A new season begins ๐๐
At 08:24 UTC (10:24 CEST) yesterday, the Sun reached its most northerly point in the sky, marking the June solstice.
Captured here by the MTG-I1 satellite from 36,000 km above Earth, this moment marks the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere. It also means the year's longest day has passed in the north, and daylight hours will now slowly begin to decrease.

Africa's glaciers - found only on Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya in East Africa, and the Ruwenzori Mountains on the Uganda-DRC border - have lost more than 90% of their area since the late nineteenth century.
Mt. Kilimanjaro's ice cover has shrunk from 11.4 kmยฒ in 1900 to just 0.98 kmยฒ today. Between June 1984 and July 2011, its snow-cover areas were reduced by 77.2%, as seen in this photo by NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth, taken on 4 March 2025.
The continued loss of these glaciers threatens regional water cycles and increases the risk of glacial lake outburst floods.
Only 40% of countries in Africa have multi-hazard early warning systems needed to save lives and livelihoods from extreme climate and weather. However, there are encouraging signs of strengthening preparedness and response capabilities across the region.

Watch as a dust storm blanketed North India in this video shared by India Meteorological Department.
Desertification can increase the conditions that allow dust storms to form and intensify.
WMO and its partners provide the science, monitoring, forecasting, and international coordination needed to reduce the impacts of these storms on people, ecosystems, economies, and public health.
