🌍 The migration journey of Kyrgyz women
Labour migration from Central Asia is increasingly feminized, and Kyrgyzstan is no exception. Today, over half of Kyrgyz migrants abroad are women. Their journeys tell stories of resilience, empowerment, and courage but also of persistent barriers, stigma, and unequal opportunities.
🔎 In 2025, IOM, with support from the European Union (EU) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), conducted a large-scale study: “Gender aspects in migration and return: women’s experience in Kyrgyzstan”.
Drawing on IOM’s Mobility Tracking Matrix (MTM) data, Focus Group Discussions, and Key Informant Interviews, the study sheds light on:
• Women’s motivations to migrate from economic necessity to independence and safety.
• Challenges abroad, including limited legal protection and risks of exploitation.
• Reintegration struggles, from lack of recognition of skills to community stigma.
• Women’s resilience and their growing empowerment in Kyrgyz society
