On 3 June 2026, FSD was honoured to welcome the UK Ambassador, H.E. Ms. Katherine Smitton, for a field visit to UK government-supported projects in Hamadoni District, Tajikistan.

During the visit, the Ambassador received a briefing on humanitarian demining activities and observed a live clearance demonstration by one of our demining teams. The visit highlighted the importance of ongoing efforts to address the threat posed by landmines and explosive remnants of war, helping to make land safe for local communities.

The Ambassador also visited a greenhouse constructed under the same UK government-supported project, which contributes to improving livelihoods and food security for local families by creating new opportunities for agricultural production and income generation.

A key highlight was meeting with local beneficiaries, who shared their experiences and the positive impact that both the land release and community development initiatives have had on their daily lives.

FSD extends its sincere appreciation to the United Kingdom for its continued partnership and support in promoting safer communities and sustainable development in Tajikistan.

This project has been funded with assistance from 🇬🇧 the UK government, UK in Tajikistan.

🌾 Risk Education for Farmers in Ukraine

Over the past year, FSD teams in Chernihiv Oblast have supported farmers and their communities on their journey to safety.

Through targeted risk education, more than 800 farmers learned how to recognise potential hazards and stay safe. The teams also reached over 8,500 community members, helping them better understand the risks.

While clearance operations are ongoing, knowledge remains one of the most effective tools for preventing accidents.

🕺 From The Stage To Risk Education

Oleg has been a dancer since childhood. Through performances in Ukraine and abroad, he discovered how deeply people admire Ukrainian culture and Cossack heritage, something that inspired him greatly.

When the fighting around Chernihiv began, he decided to help his country and joined FSD in February 2023. Today, Oleg is a leading specialist in explosive ordnance risk education. He works with communities to raise awareness about explosive hazards and help people stay safe.

His stage experience helps him work with people: keeping their attention, sensing the audience, and working with emotions — especially important when teaching children. People thank him and invite him back, because this work is about saving lives.

Despite everything, creativity remains part of Oleg's life. And his dream is for Ukraine to be safe, so that people can live without fear.

☀️ The sun is back and so are the demining teams!

After several months of weather conditions that kept demining teams off the field, FSD teams in Ukraine have returned to the field to clear explosive ordnance.

Throughout the winter, the demining and survey teams carried on their marking and surveying operations and continued to sharpen their skills and to strengthen their skills and their technical expertise, while our risk education teams kept raising awareness in schools and communities.

Now that the sun has returned, are deminers are back in the field to clear the land contaminated by explosive threats.

⚠️ Growing Up Surrounded by Danger

“A teenager from a neighbouring village carried a PFM-1 mine in his pocket all the way to Izium,” explains Maksym. At just 15, this Ukrainian student has to face the presence of mines and unexploded ordnance in his daily life.

FSD works to protect civilians by clearing explosive hazards and delivering risk education sessions to communities affected by conflict, so they can stay safe while demining operations are underway.
