For centuries, open alpine meadows defined the mountains: summer grazing, wildflowers, the sound of cowbells. That landscape is disappearing.
As temperatures rise, forests are climbing higher. Trees are swallowing pastures that have existed for generations. And species that only survive in high, open spaces have nowhere left to go.
Biogeographer Antoine Guisan studies these shifts, tracking which plant species are moving, which are thriving, and which are being squeezed out of existence.
Using predictive models, scientists can now show what the Alps will look like in 50 years. The green meadows we know might be replaced by dense forest.
A transformation of an ecosystem we once thought was eternal. Are we ready to lose the landscapes that define us?
