We know that the terroir in South Kivu is ideal for growing arabica coffee. But within the species of Coffea arabica there are many varieties, each of which has unique growing characteristics in the field and flavor profiles in the cup.

So which varieties of arabica are grown here in South Kivu? While many of the trees here are over 100 years old and transplanted here from other countries, there are a lot of new cultivars being developed locally. Often cherries are brought to a single washing station from many small farms and the exact varieties are not known in a particular lot of coffee.

A USAID guide to available arabica varieties in DRC highlights the following: Bourbon Mayaguez 17 (BM71), Bourbon Mayaguez 139 (BM139), Jackson 2/1257, SL 28, Mulungu, Kabare 16, Geisha, Catimor, Batian, Ruiru 11.

It’s a family thing. We love good coffee. we gather as a family at the table, often with 3 generations together, and sort recently harvested and processed green coffee. We remove defective beans that might negatively affect the taste in the cup.
