StudyUp Tip of the Week: Get Linked!
Whether you are a student searching for the perfect job, or a graduate trying to advance your current career, we all know a good online presence is essential in these modern times. Web pages and social networking sites can make, or even break a career. LinkedIn is a site that provides a way for aspiring students and professional people alike to expand their networking base.
In a nutshell, LinkedIn is a social networking service that allows members to connect with old friends and work colleagues on a professional level. Your LinkedIn profile acts as a mini resume of your accomplishments and work experience. They have a built in search engine that suggests connections for you with people from your geographical area, profession, workplace, and many other variables. Members can make contact with prospective colleagues, employers, and businesses from all over the globe.
Once you have built up enough connections, LinkedIn can become an especially useful tool for finding a new job. Through second and third degree connections created from your network, you can find out about opportunities that you would otherwise have not heard about. You can also follow companies that you may want to work for, and be super prepared when interview day rolls around. It's all FREE, so there should be nothing stopping you from getting yourself “Linked In” to the professional networking scene today!
StudyUp Tip of the Week: Freelancing is the Way to go!
Ever think of working for yourself? Wouldn’t it be nice to make your own schedule, and be your own boss? Even if you just devote a few hours per week to doing your own freelance work, it can quickly amount to some serious extra cash in your pocket. If you have a knack for drawing, writing, or anything that someone may value, then why not check out some of the many freelance sites that are available on the net?
Ifreelance.com, Elance.com, FreelanceSwitch.com are just a few examples of the great places where you can go to view job postings, discuss and learn about the freelance world, or even boast about your skills! You may have to start small and apply for several different projects before anything materializes. But, if you persevere and start making a name for yourself in the freelance sector you specialize in, the offers may just start pouring in.
Freelancing is not only a great way to earn some extra money. More importantly, it allows you to explore your interests and develop the talents that set you apart in the workforce. Think about all of the time you spend watching TV in the evenings, or surfing aimlessly on the internet. If you started freelance work only every second night for example, you would still have a huge advantage over other students that will be competing for the same jobs as you when you graduate. And hey, let’s be honest, how many students out there can honestly say they couldn’t use a few extra bucks!
Remember the days when the first introduction an employer had to a prospective employee was via a resume? Of course we all know times have changed drastically since then. Resumes are still important, but what you may not realize is how a good, clean website can help take you to the next level of professionalism in the eyes of an employer.
That's right, maintaing a personal website is an excellent way for employers to see your talents. Your website can act as a portfolio for you and your abilities. It is a great place to post samples of your work and projects. Better yet, the cost to upkeep a website is minimal; with hosting costing less than 10 dollars per year.
Website templates are so easy to use these days that basically anyone who uses Facebook can handle creating and updating their own. Look, if just one other candidate in line for the same job has a well kept website, and you do not, you are instantly at a disadvantage. Plus, who knows, with a personal website live, you may just find job offers start coming to you!
