π¨ Canada Tightens Asylum Rules β Key Change You Must Know (Bill C-12) π¨π¦
On March 26, 2026, the Government of Canada passed Bill C-12, bringing major changes to asylum eligibility and immigration processing.
π IMPORTANT UPDATE (Effective for claims on or after June 3, 2025):
If you entered Canada after June 24, 2020 and wait more than 1 year to claim asylum, your case will NOT be referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) β even if you left and re-entered Canada.
β οΈ This is a major shift. Delays can now completely block access to the refugee system.
πΌ What this means for you:
β’ Timing is now critical
β’ Late claims may be refused without a hearing
β’ You may only have limited options like PRRA
β
What you should do:
β’ Seek advice as early as possible
β’ Do NOT delay your claim
β’ Ensure your case is properly prepared from the start
