"Just because we are alone, doesn't mean our parents aren't home"

Young wild animal babies are often left in a safe location by the parent(s). Part of their developmental survival skills includes remaining in an area where parents can provide for them. Baby birds spend time on the ground after they fledge, or in low-hanging brush areas. The parents provide food, and protection and vocalize danger warnings as well until the young can fly.

Canid parents - coyotes, foxes, and wolves are all-knowing. They are protective, attentive, and beyond-efficient providers. Coyotes are under threat by many environmental factors but the most imminent risk and danger are due to our misconceptions and misinterpretations of a situation and dogs off-leash.

Because you do not see an adult nearby does not mean that pups are orphaned. Coyote pups/fox kits can successfully be raised by a single parent (once weaned). And while we appreciate that folks care and want to help, we kindly reiterate that NOT removing young pups/kits is the most humane and kindest decision you can make.

Few times are there situations that warrant mindful monitoring. Please email us if you are in need of guidance and reassurance. Email [email protected]. Be specific with all of the details, photos and location. Do not remove young from the landscape or linger too long.

✅️ 3 ways you can help young families stay together:

1. Please leave them be. By not approaching or hanging around these sensitive areas, parents can continue to protect and care for their young.

2. Leash up dog(s).
The family dog is considered another dangerous predator to coyote parents. They may react defensively to protect themselves and their family.

3. Never feed wild animals.
Harmful handouts create congregated wildlife and put animals and people at risk of negative interactions. Feeding wildlife can cause severe health and wellness issues to these incredibly capable beings.
