I love the ritual of taping my kids hockey sticks before a big game. (Happy they still let me do it for them) As I tape I visualize them playing the game they love and I send them reiki to help keep them safe (some games can be pretty rough both physically and emotionally) I was almost finished taping this stick when the roll ran out. Darn. At that point I had a few choices. I could get really frustrated that I misjudged the amount of tape left on the roll, I could ‘patch’ the current tape job (a taping no no), or I could begin again. I took a deep breath (did a few Tap, Tap, Taps) and started to unwrap. As I was retaping I started to reflect on how some ‘fans in the stands’ at these hockey games often lose their cool over a bad play or a bad call etc. especially during playoff season. (Aka their tape roll runs out and they go nuts) In order to help calm the nervous system in these tense moments I like to recommend an Emotional Freedom Techniques finger tapping tool. Here’s how it works: As you take deep breaths tap on the side of each finger along the side of the nail. Move from finger to finger (and thumbs) until you have done it at least once on each finger of each hand. If you don’t want to tap you can try gently squeezing the sides of each finger while taking deep breaths. Both of these techniques help to calm your amygdala (the part of your brain that is responsible for your fight, flight or freeze response) and allow you to cheer your child on instead of going into overwhelm when things might not be going the way you hoped.
