When post-secondary programs in music are CUT - whether in music education, performance or industry arts - the loss goes far beyond a campus.

Students lose access to mentorship, training, and pathways into sustainable creative careers.

The arts community loses emerging voices, collaborators, educators, and leaders.

The music ecosystem loses the skilled performers, technicians, producers, managers, and teachers who keep it alive.

And eventually, the public loses too—fewer live shows, fewer music programs in schools, fewer culturally rich spaces, and fewer shared moments that music uniquely creates.

These programs don’t just train musicians. They sustain culture, community, and connection.

Closing them isn’t a cost-saving measure—it’s a long-term cultural deficit.

There’s a difference between quitting… and outgrowing.

In this clip, Martha Cotrill talks about the things she wasn’t allowed to quit as a kid—music lessons and swimming—and how those experiences quietly shaped her life decades later.

She didn’t always love it. She definitely didn’t love practicing. And at one point, she walked away from piano altogether. But years later, during a stressful time in university, she wandered into a practice room… and her fingers remembered.

What started as obligation became therapy. And eventually, joy.

This is one of those moments that makes you rethink parenting, perseverance, and the long game of learning.
