Most of us have a lot of balls in the air at any given time and we try to juggle them all. And the holiday season often comes with extra balls creating a very advanced juggling act! It is therefore important to differentiate which tasks are fragile and which ones we can drop. Thinking about tasks as glass versus plastic balls gives us a way of doing that. When you are feeling stressed because the neighbours brought you over some cookies and you don’t have anything for them, ask yourself “is this a glass or a plastic ball”? Glass balls, if dropped, have significant and long-lasting consequences. Plastic balls on the other hand will bounce and can be picked up later (assuming you want them). Figuring out which is which can help you prioritize the things that matter most to you.
If you need help prioritizing and letting go of the plastic balls, the therapists at the Waterloo CBT Clinic can help. For more information or to make an appointment, please call, email or visit our website.

Over the years, Taylor Swift has shared many words of wisdom that align with the principles we use in cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).
From reminding us that mistakes don’t define who we are to encouraging courage in the face of fear, her reflections echo key strategies used in therapy: reframing unhelpful thoughts, practicing self-compassion, and finding strength in uncertainty. It’s a good reminder that psychology and everyday wisdom often meet in the same place helping us build resilience, perspective, and balance.
If you or someone you love is experiencing difficulties with their mental health, the registered psychologists and psychotherapists at the Waterloo CBT Clinic are available to help.
Virtual and in person appointments are available.
