May 5 is Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+).
In 2009, Métis artist Jaime Black hung empty red dresses in public spaces, the REDress Project. Each dress represented a missing or murdered Indigenous woman, girl, or Two-Spirit person, a visible, collective reminder of a crisis deeply felt across Indigenous communities.
That crisis is ongoing. The 2019 National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls produced 231 Calls for Justice, a roadmap for real change that families and communities are still waiting to see fulfilled. These are mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties, and relatives whose absence is felt deeply across Turtle Island.
Today we remember them. We hold their families in our hearts. We stand for justice in their honour.
