The most famous story involving Mary & Martha is recorded in Luke 10:38-42. While hosting Jesus, the contrast between the two women becomes central. Martha becomes overwhelmed and "distracted with much serving". Frustrated that her sister has left her with all the work, she asks Jesus to command Mary to help. Jesus gently corrects her anxiety rather than her actual desire to serve. In first-century Jewish culture, women were expected to handle hospitality chores. By allowing Mary to sit at his feet, Jesus validates her role as a disciple. Tom's sermon, "Jesus & Martha at Home", helps bring this event into context of our everyday lives.
