A hike up to Brett Camp with Elka.

Typically done on horseback, the two hour(ish), semi-strenuous hike up to Chilcotin Holidays' Brett Camp alpine hut is an experience I won't soon forget. Starting out early, our hike took us up logging roads that transitioned to steep trails. Bordered by trees, wildflowers, and across two streams, the trail itself is beautiful, but nothing compared to the views when nearing the hut. Vistas of the sharp coastal mountain peaks rise in the distance on one side, with the rolling peaks of the Shulaps on the other. In the alpine meadows behind the cabin, wildflowers sprout, marmots dig their tunnels, and small rivers originating from the snowpack above cut through the greenery-carpeted ground.

Hiking in the wilderness provides perhaps one of the best ways to bond with others--as Elka and I did between water breaks and deep breaths--but so too does it continue to solidify a deeper connection with the great outdoors itself. To wash in the beauty of this place I'd never been, was the perfect departing activity at the ranch.

An evening to remember in the Chilcotin.

All piled into the boat-like Suburban, we set out in search of wildlife as the sun set over the coastal mountains in the distance. Bear, sheep, elk, deer, and wolf comprise just a small number of the plethora of species that inhabit the biologically-unique Chilcotin Ark. Although we didn't see much wildlife, save a couple deer, we found incredible vistas, as Cameron filled our ears with tales of bravery and excitement hunting in the Chilcotins.
