MEDIA ADVISORY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 30, 2025

VICTORIA, BC -- Anakbayan Victoria, Migrante BC , Jesus is Lord Victoria, Friends & Family Bake , and Kabayan Asosasyon Para sa Edukasyon (KAPE), alongside concerned Filipino community members and allies, invites the community to gather in solemn remembrance for the lives lost in the tragic Lapu-Lapu incident with “Tinig ng Panalangin: Voices of Prayer - A 40th Day of Remembrance” on June 5, Thursday at 6:00 PM at Victoria, BC. Venue details are still being confirmed and will be released as soon as they are available.

Rooted deeply in Filipino tradition, the 40th day after death holds spiritual and cultural significance. It is believed to be the moment a soul completes its journey and ascends to the Creator, similar to the biblical ascension of Jesus. In Filipino customs, this sacred milestone is marked through a padasal (communal prayer) and shared meal, offering both spiritual guidance for the departed and healing for the living.

This event honors the victims of the Lapu-Lapu Tragedy that shook the Filipino-Canadian community in Vancouver, and aims to provide a collective space for prayer, reflection, and solidarity. In a time of grief, such traditions serve not only as remembrance but also as a powerful expression of community resilience and unity.

“Our culture teaches us to remember through connection, with each other and with those who have passed,” says Eileen Tiamzon, Chairperson of Anakbayan Victoria. “Events like this remind us of the strength we carry through our heritage and the importance of organizing continuously around our issues. They help us stay grounded, connected, and supported, especially in times of collective mourning. This is how we heal… together.”

The evening will begin with a solemn prayer service followed by an open mic segment featuring music, poetry, and storytelling under the theme “Celebration of Light.” Community members are encouraged to express love, remembrance, and hope through performances that uplift and honor life.

ICYMI: Snapshots from tabling outreach at Friends & Family Bakery ( #101-3 Fan Tan Alley) to learn more about voter disenfranchisement and voting attitudes of overseas Filipinos in “Victoria”. We also gave away care packages for migrant women during International Working Women’s day!

Thank you again to Friends & Family Bake for their kindness and support during these moments. We are forever grateful for them and the joy (and delicious goodies 😋) they bring to our community in “Victoria”.

Not pictured here, but we are also incredibly grateful for their donation during the April 27 Luksang Bayan vigil hosted at the Legislative Assembly building!

Support from community members like Friends and Family Bakery allows grassroots organizations like us to stay intimately connected with our community, learn more about their stories, and logistically, builds our capacity as an organization and boost our motivation to continue serving the people!

Maraming salamat po! ❤️‍🔥
