We've been doing a lot of digging at the nursery this spring.

This Fargesia scabrida (my favourite clumping bamboo) spent five years in the ground before we dug and divided it. 🪚 Part of the plant was left in the ground to continue growing. 🌱

The new shipment is in! Our shelves are bursting with some of our most popular bamboo.

Here's what we've restocked in:
Phyllostachys aurea 'Holochrysa' (Golden Bamboo)
Phyllostachys aurea 'Koi'
Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' (Golden Crookstem)
Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' (Golden Timber Bamboo)
Fargesia robusta 'Campbell'
Fargesia scabrida

A giant change at Victoria Bamboo! We dug up one of our oldest groves, Phyllostachys dulcis (Sweetshoot Bamboo), which has been in the ground for over a decade.

The newly potted Phyllostachys dulcis went back into the same space, and now we have room to propagate other species there as well. 🌱

In the fall bamboo often drop around 5-15% of their leaves. These leaves turn yellow and then fall off on their own. 🍂

This can be a bit alarming the first time you see it happen, but it's completely normal. Like all evergreen plants, bamboo drop and replace leaves throughout the year, most dramatically in the spring and fall.

After and before pruning this timber bamboo (Phyllostachys atrovaginata or Incense Bamboo). Steve for scale.

Getting some pruning done. 🌿

Now that these bamboo have been in the planter for a few years we cut out around 25% of the culms once per year. We also prune off the lower side branches to show off the base of the culms.

After a decade of bamboo deliveries we've got loading our one-ton truck figured out.

This year's new Golden Crookstem* shoots have almost finished leafing out. These shoots first emerged in mid April

We cut out last year's short canes to tidy the grove up a couple weeks ago.

*Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' is a very fast running, extra cold hardy, mid-height bamboo. If the new shoots are exposed to enough direct sunlight they'll blush red or even a deep scarlet before they settle into their mature deep gold.
