Happy World Otter Day! 𦦠Here's some info you "otter" check out!
If youâve ever visited the rugged coastlines of Vancouver Island, youâve probably spotted these furry icons floating in the kelp forests. Sea otters are the ultimate coastal cool-cats (well, weasels, technically!), playing a massive role in keeping our Pacific marine ecosystems healthy and vibrant. đ¨đŚâ¨
Want to brush up on your otter trivia? Here are 5 fun facts about these incredibly clever creatures:
1) They are ecosystem superheroes: Sea otters are a "keystone species." By munching on sea urchins, they prevent them from destroying the kelp forests, which provide a vital habitat for countless other marine species.
2) They hold hands while sleeping: To keep from drifting away in the ocean currents, sea otters will hold hands to form whatâs called a "raft." Talk about ultimate friendship goals!
3) They have built-in pockets: Underneath their forelegs, sea otters have loose folds of skin that act like pockets. They use them to store food theyâve gathered from the ocean floor, or even their favorite rock.
4) Speaking of rocksâthey use tools: They are one of the few mammals known to use tools! Theyâll place a rock on their chest and smash clams, crabs, and abalone against it to crack them open.
5) They have the densest fur on the planet: Unlike other marine mammals, otters don't have blubber to keep warm. Instead, they rely on their incredibly thick furâsporting up to 1 million hairs per square inch!
Next time you're exploring the Pacific Northwest, keep your eyes on the kelp beds. You might just catch a raft of them relaxing in the waves.
