Since issue 5, i-D Magazine has featured a wink on every cover...one eye closed, covered, or hidden. Something that started as playful, flirty, and cheeky, became one of the most recognizable signatures in publishing.
In the 90s, i-D wasn’t just a magazine, it was culture. Founded in the 80s by Terry Jones, designer and former Vogue art director; i-D blended fashion, music, lifestyle and art, and focused on youth and innovative photography in a way that felt raw, progressive, rebellious, and entirely new, while spotlighting fresh faces and cool girls, like Chloë Sevigny, Devon Aoki, Drew Barrymore, Linda Evangelista, and Naomi Campbell...often before the world fully caught on to their talent.

And this Kate Moss cover shot by David Sims in 1996 was totally unplanned! On set, Kate was trying, but was finding it difficult to blink on cue… so she adapted and covered her eye herself! Something unplanned, that came from a moment of trial, error, and improvisation, turned into one of the most iconic fashion moments of the decade and one of the magazines most recognizable covers. Naturally, and I had to recreate it for part 4 of our 90's Nostalgia series. 🖤
