The most frequent tech question I’ve heard lately is whether anything can be done about the lag in chat software like Zoom, FaceTime, Messenger, or Skype. The latency is the result of your machine converting the audio and video to a format it can send + your router determining the next router to forward the resulting packets to for delivery + the next indeterminate number of routers along the path to make the same decision + the fact the packets usually take different paths + the time it takes electrical impulses to travel from router to router + the time for your router to pass the packets to your CPU + the time for your CPU to assemble the packets and pass the stream to your application to show it to you. It’s a miracle it works at all! Lag is inevitable. Accept it.
