An Exploration of Electroacoustic Music: Instrument Design, Composition and Reception
Thursday, September 07, 4:30 PM
ACW 103
This project examines composing and listening in electroacoustic music contexts from several perspectives. It provides an overview of electroacoustic music analysis and its relationship to scholarship on listening and embodied music cognition. Starting off with free improvising and composing with electroacoustic music, building upon previous research that has explored a listener-based approach to analyzing electroacoustic music, this project investigates the audience's listening experience and its relationship to the various sonic attributes that result from the creative process. Accompanying the creative component, this project presents a preliminary experiment that explores the dynamics of audience listening by designing both concert-based and on-line listening sessions that capture reflections from the audience's perspective. The goal of this project is to broaden conversations around existing frameworks for electroacoustic music analysis to include an expanded understanding of listening – both in terms of composing and audience reception – as a holistic, embodied, and collaborative process within a creative context.
Xi Lu will present for 20 - 30 minutes followed by time for questions and discussion.
