The two darts of suffering

10/05/2023

In 3 Jewels Recovery, we use the Buddhist principles of mindfulness, compassion, and ethical action to heal the suffering that addiction has caused in our lives and the lives of others. These principles have been developed and taught across Asia over 2,600 years, from India to Japan, coming to North America within the last two centuries. We acknowledge and give thanks to the Theravada (tare-a-vada), Mahayana (ma-hah-yawn-a), and Vajrayana (vaj-rah-yawn-a) lineages that inform the teachings and tools we access in this meeting. We centre our recovery within the 3 jewels of Buddhism: the potential to lessen our suffering (the Buddha) , the teachings that show us how (the Dharma) , and the community who supports us through it (the Sangha). This approach understands that people are most empowered to lessen the suffering of addiction when given tools and resources within a community of mutual support. We respect both an abstinence and harm reduction approach to recovery, and honour the traditions and philosophies that form the individual paths of group participants. We emphasize the importance of spiritual care in recovery, and foster this through meditation, readings, and reflections. We believe in engaged action that takes skillfulness beyond our own liberation toward justice for all people and for the environment.
