Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦

Today I’m taking a break from talking about classrooms, executive function, and observation to simply enjoy this beautiful country that I’m fortunate to call home.

Summer always reminds me how much children—and adults—benefit from slowing down.

Fresh air.

Time outside.

Connection.

Play.

Wonder.

Whether you’re spending today at a lake, around a campfire, in your garden, at a parade, or simply enjoying a quiet day with family and friends, I hope you’re finding moments to rest and restore.

Wishing everyone a safe, joyful Canada Day. ❤️🍁

The school year may be over, but one of the most important parts of our work continues.

Preparation of the Adult.

Maria Montessori understood that children need more than a prepared environment.

They need a prepared adult.

Today, neuroscience helps us understand why.

Children borrow our nervous systems.

They notice our pace.

Our flexibility.

Our curiosity.

Our emotional regulation.

Our joy.

Throughout the year we’ve talked about executive function, observation, belonging, responsive teaching, and neuroaffirming practice.

All of those ideas come back to one simple truth:

The educator is the intervention.

If that is true, then preparing ourselves is one of the most important things we can do.

This summer, don’t only ask:

“What do I need to prepare?”

Also ask:

“Who do I want to be when children return?”

Perhaps the most important preparation isn’t found in your classroom.

Perhaps it’s found in your own restoration.

Rest well.

Play.

Wonder.

Laugh.

Children deserve prepared environments.

They also deserve prepared adults.

As another school year comes to a close, I hope you leave knowing this:

You mattered.

Not because every lesson was perfect.

Not because every child made the progress you hoped for.

Not because your classroom looked beautiful.

You mattered because of the relationships you built.

The calm you offered.

The moments you noticed.

The times you chose curiosity over judgment.

The safety you created.

The belonging you cultivated.

Throughout the year, we’ve talked about executive function, observation, belonging, neuroaffirming practice, and responsive teaching.

One idea has woven through all of those conversations:

The educator is the intervention.

If that is true—and I believe it is—then the most important thing you can prepare this summer isn’t your classroom.

It’s yourself.

Preparation of the adult isn’t only about reading another book or organizing another shelf.

It’s also about restoring your nervous system.

Finding joy.

Being with the people you love.

Laughing.

Playing.

Resting without guilt.

Because children deserve prepared environments.

And they deserve prepared adults.

Thank you for everything you have given to the children in your care this year.

Have a restful, restorative summer. ❤️
