What do we mean when we say Placekeeping?

As a national non-profit transforming public spaces across Canada, it’s critical that our work starts by understanding places. That means working with communities to honour the histories, ecologies and knowledge already rooted there.

Award-winning Métis landscape architect Terence Radford, Principal at Trophic Design and long time Evergreen Design Consultant, puts it this way:

“We’re allowing the land to lead and we’re honouring that place. We’re doing Placekeeping by working with a site rather than trying to fight it.”

Terence and his team often begin by looking back at a place’s history and ecology—including pre-colonial conditions—to understand what existed there long before current development. That research helps reveal how a site has changed over time before imagining its future.
