Don't be afraid to be a beginner.

We all start somewhere and there's only progress to be made from there. The only way to get past the beginning is to begin.

Expect each run to be the hardest yet. Brace for the worst to run your best.

Keep your expectations in check. You don't know if your body will decide to make your run the worst one ever or if the planets will align and you have the greatest run of your life. Setting sub goals for each run can help you with feeling accomplished each time you head out when the bad runs happen. But above all, getting to the end is the most important thing, even if that means walking most of it because of circumstance.

Being a fit spectator sucks. Make sure to get to the line healthy.

As you run more and start putting bigger distances behind you, you also increase your chances of hurting yourself if you don't take the proper precautions. Make sure you are getting enough rest and don't ramp up the distances too quickly! Running should be fun and not a cause for pain!

Run fast enough to get there but slow enough to see.

Whenever you set out on a run, you want to crush it and set a new personal best for the distance. That's a great goal in general, but I find it can take the enjoyment out of the activity. If you slow down just a bit you will find so many things to enjoy around you. Pick a route out of the way with something new to see. Maybe it's a forest trail, a new neighbourhood, or even a landmark. You'll be happy you did and enjoy the run so much more.

A 12 Minute mile is just as far as a 6 minute mile.

We all want to be as fast as our idols. Those gifted athletes who can move like the wind. We get bogged down thinking our slower times are "bad" or "unworthy" of even being mentioned. Too easily we forget that everyone starts somewhere and you're starting now. Your best has yet to come.

Besides...

You and that faster person would be tied in the most important category of all: Distance travelled.
