π¬οΈ Hawa Mahal - The Palace of Winds, Jaipur, India
The Palace of the Winds is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Rajput architecture in India. It is adorned with 953 windows. These were designed to enable the ladies of the royal court to watch street theatre unobserved, hidden behind the delicate latticework. Also known as the Hawa Mahal, the palace was built in 1799 for Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh as part of the women's quarters of the expansive City Palace complex in the heart of Jaipur. The street-facing faΓ§ade is essentially an enormous screened porch, only one room deep in most places. In 1876, Jaipur was preparing for the visit of the Prince of Wales. To welcome him with warmth and grandeur, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II ordered the entire city to be painted terracotta pink β a colour symbolizing hospitality and friendliness in Rajput culture β earning Jaipur its nickname of 'The Pink City'.

The Toorji Ka Jhalra was constructed in the 1740s by the queen-consort of Maharaja Abhay Singh, and features detailed sandstone carvings. Notably, the Jodhpur Stepwell had been buried for years and only recently underwent a restoration to return it to its former glory. The primary function of the structure was to provide a reliable water source during the dry seasons. It also served as a communal gathering point and still does.
