It’s with a heavy heart that I share this “Coffee/Forest Project” update — following the passing of my dear friend and fierce supporter of this project, Dr. Jane Goodall.
In her final video message to over 1000 students in Los Angeles, she left them — and now all of us — with this amoung other important truths:
“Money itself is good if you use it for good. But if you’re just trying to get more and more — more houses, more cars — that’s where it’s gone wrong. This is what’s led to this unsustainable lifestyle.”
Dr. Goodall’s support of gave it a value far beyond balance sheets, but what money CAN do is help fund change. Right now, there’s a $577 billion gap between what’s needed for vital environmental action and what’s actually being funded.
🌱 Despite needing funding, this critical work continues — for coffee farmers, for forests, and for the future of all living beings. I remain committed to its mission with courage and resolve, and I hope it inspires you to take action too. 🙌☕🌍

Transparency matters 🌱☕️
This coffee post is inspired by a few things:
1. A She Grows Coffee coffee customer’s quote.
2. The recent spike in world coffee prices.
3. She Grows Coffee’s very first direct trade coffee, which came with a unique “transparency report” detailing the price breakdown, from farm to warehouse.
Here’s the truth, to know what the farmer is getting paid you need the “farmgate price” … And that number in all cases (except the very rare) this isn’t available.
So … are coffee growers really making more when prices rise?
Maybe. Maybe not.
With so many steps in the supply chain it makes it hard to discern. The unfortunate likelihood is that many farmers probably don’t directly benefit from higher global coffee prices. In some cases they will be, but without knowing the farmgate price there’s really no other way of being certain.

These beautiful coffee trees will be available for the rest of the summer! Pick one up any Saturday farmers’ market. DM me if you’d like to put one on hold ☕️💚
Someone asked me recently: Why do you grow coffee trees in Canada, if they won’t produce enough beans for you to brew a cup?
My answer: I’ve always loved nature, so when I dedicated myself to coffee as a career, my immediate impulse was to learn as much as I could about coffee sustainability. Starting to grow coffee trees was almost instinctive.
First of all, I wanted to know how a coffee plant looked, to see how it grew, to learn if I could keep it alive, and (hopefully) get to feel that sense of accomplishment having grown even just one coffee cherry.
Second, I wanted to get a sense of what it takes to produce coffee, get a better understanding of coffee farming, and really internalize what environment coffee needs.
Now, after over a decade growing coffee in Canada, it’s become a symbol of my coffee journey. At this point, I can’t imagine not taking care of coffee trees, and I want to share the experience with others.
I’ve always felt that if everyone learned to care for just one plant, the world could be a better place. And if I had to pick one, well, we all know what plant that would be 😉🌱

To celebrate this year I published a fresh, new coffee growing post about how to grow a coffee tree from seed (with pictures!) Find it on my website 🤗

I’m a curious person by nature and can always relate to when coffee-lovers have questions. One question typically leads to another and next thing you know we’re having a great coffee conversation.
There’s a lot to learn about coffee, so I find that simplifying can be really helpful. Most of the questions people have boil down to answering this one: “How can I improve my coffee?”
Enter: The 3 Keys to Great Coffee! 🔑 🔑 🔑
Think of these as the “Coles Notes” for better coffee. In life, questions about coffee will always arise, and these keys can be used to unlock the most simple answers.
