এই দিনের শুরু অনেক আগে, ১৫৭৮ সালে, যখন ইংরেজ অভিযাত্রী স্যার মার্টিন ফ্রোবিশার উত্তর আমেরিকার ভূমিতে নিরাপদ যাত্রার জন্য তিনি ঈশ্বরের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করেছিলেন।
পরে কৃষকদের ফসল কাটার মৌসুমে আশীর্বাদ ও প্রাচুর্যের জন্য ধন্যবাদ জানানোর ঐতিহ্য থেকেই গড়ে ওঠে আজকের Thanksgiving।

১৯৫৭ সালে কানাডার পার্লামেন্ট এই দিনটিকে অক্টোবরের দ্বিতীয় সোমবার জাতীয় ছুটি হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে, যেন সবাই পরিবার-পরিজনের সঙ্গে মিলিত হয়ে গত বছরের আশীর্বাদগুলোর জন্য কৃতজ্ঞতা জানাতে পারে।
